Poolscaping: Gardening and Landscaping Around Your
Swimming Pool and Spa
by Catriona Tudort. Erler, Catriona Tudor Erler Bare, stark swimming pools - those rectangular concrete holes in
the ground surrounded by a chain-link fence - are going the way of
the dinosaurs. Pool owners (and there are 7 million of them across
North America) have begun to see the pool and the area around it
as an outdoor living space, a place for entertaining a crowd or relaxing
alone. In response to this hot, new trend, gardener and landscape
designer Catriona Tudor Erler has written POOLSCAPING, a one-of-a-kind
handbook overflowing with inspiring ideas and practical advice on
how to make your swimming pool the lovely, welcoming centerpiece
of your property. Erler takes readers step by step through the poolscaping process,
whether starting from scratch or renovating an existing pool. She
begins with choosing the best location for the pool and designing
(or refurbishing) the deck and edging that will surround it. She
presents a host of ideas for dramatic pool lighting, including underwater
options. The fencing chapter addresses choosing styles as well as
safety issues and even how to disguise a fence with plantings. Erler explores design options for building or renovating a spa adjacent
to the pool, as well as how to incorporate furnishings, pergolas,
and pool houses into the poolscape. A plant directory features the
best poolside plants, with a focus on varieties of flowers, vines,
and shrubs that are low maintenance and look attractive throughout
the pool season. Erler also offers ideas for outstanding poolside
planters and containers for bringing greenery and color right up
to the pool. Illustrated with beautiful full-color photographs of outstanding
poolscapes, this unique guide demonstrates how any pool owner can
transform the pool area into the showpiece of the neighborhood.

have a better of selection of plants. Ortho's book also includes
illustrations on exactly how to install the different types of
ponds as well as information on filtration systems, edgeing,
lighting, etc. The back of the book also contains lists and photos
of various plants and fish that are suitable for the different
types of water gardens. If you only want to buy one book on garden

American Horticultural Society Complete Guide To Water
Gardening
by Peter Robinson
If you find aquatic plants fascinating but aren't sure where to
start, let this thorough how-to manual be your guide. Brimming with
practical insights and photographic inspirations, the Complete Guide
to Water Gardening supplies step-by-step instructions for all types
of water features, from full-blown oriental ponds to a simple container
of bog plants. Possibilities are only as limited as your size and
budget.
Proper planning is essential to good results, and this book takes
it nice and slow. Explanations are straightforward and comprehensible
for folks who have some previous home improvement experience, but
for a first-ever project, this may be biting off a bit more than
you can chew. Leveling, backfilling, laying concrete--these are a
few of the details to prepare for in adding even a small pond to
your garden. You'll see your efforts pay off quickly, though. Flourishing
plants and a return of natural amphibians are a couple of rewards
in sight.
Plant selection involves a good understanding of this developing
ecosystem, and the sections concerning options and routine maintenance
are specific in the requirements of your new garden. Close-up shots
of healthy plants and systems, as well as diseases and pests, will
provide an excellent education. If you're looking for a new adventure
in gardening and don't mind getting your feet wet, this could provide
just the experience you're looking for. --Jill Lightner |

The Ultimate Water Garden Book
by Jean-Claude Arnoux
This was the only book, that I was able to find,
that covered all of the different techniques for pond construction,
including fiberglass.
For that reason alone it was worth the purchase price. But the book
also contains an excellent review of different pond styles and half
of the book is a review of different pond plants and animals. But
it's strongest point is it's complete coverage of all the different
construction techniques and methods. --An Amazon.com Customer |
