Here
are some pictures of some fossils that we are trying to find
their identity.
(These images are thumbnailed, click on them for
the full sized image to open in a seperate window. Some of these
images are very large to show the best detail, so they may take
a while to load.)
The fossils are approximatly 20-24" in diameter, 4-6" thick,
most are oval shaped but few seem to be two joined together, composed
of two layers, each layer is made up of cone shapes, the top layer
cones point down and the bottom layer point up, there appears to
be something seperating the layers. the Cones appear to have cell
like structure and appear to be like funnels stacked inside of
funnels to make up a cone. The host rock is shale. I believe it
is from the middle Devonian period.? All these fosils appear to
be represented in only one layer of shale, it does not seem to
deviate from this period in shale formation. We were told they
are suedo-fossils (spelling?) "just an abnormalty in the formation
of the shale. But the cones seem to have a cell struction. I also
found a Crinoid Column fossil in the same area, but it was deposited
on a gravel bar by the creek. If you have any idea what this is,
please E-mail me!
Here
are two. Approximatly four feet apart. And exposed.
Here
is a group of four. Approximatly 4-6 feet apart. And still covered
with a layer of shale.
One
partially exposed.
One
that has been carried by the creek and placed on top of some shale.
There is also an odd shaped one still embedded near Pat's foot.
Same
one, closer view.
Here
is Pat standing on one that is still covered by a layer of shale.
Another
one carried and deposited by the creek.
Closer
view.
Closer
still. Notice the cone shapes making up the fossil. And how the
two layers point to the inside, with a layer of something in between.
Here
are some of the individual cones from this fossil.
Another
view of a cone.
