Default Paramo No. 10 hand plane

I guess no one can get into woodworking until you've learnt how to use and care for hand tools. In my case, this has led to the collecting of hand tools - wooden & steel planes, chisels, marking gauges, anything remotely connected to woodworking. This is what led to my latest aquisition, a Paramo No. 10, sans blade.

Does anyone out there have a Paramo No. 10? I need to know what the blade assembly looks like, does it have a plane iron and cutter, or is just a cutter and what does it look like?

I've already resigned myself to scratch-building the blade!

With hope and regards!

Default Paramo planemaster #10

Hello Bobby,

Thanks for replying, It sounds like you're in the same boat as I am, nevertheless, I'll take some shots of my planemaster and post them on this thread. Hopefully, we can come up with something that'll solve the problem for the both of us. I do have the equivalent of the lever cap. Anyhow, I'll take the pics and post them soonest

Regards

Bryan

Default Paramo #10 - What mine looks like

Hello Bobby,

Well, I've also taken some shots of the plane from various angles. From what I see on your pic, we're in pretty much the same boat. Anyway, here's my pic set for your info. It looks like I'll have to make the blade :-(

Regards

Bryan

Default Paramo Pb10

I have a Paramo PB10 plane in full working order except replaceable blades are all worn. Is there a supply of blades available or is it possible to resharpen? roger62.

Default Paramo replacement blades

Hello all,

Here in southern Africa, Paramo is a little known name and I haven't found a blade, never mind new ones!

I would say it should be possible to resharpen the blade provided it's more of a honing/finishing procedure rather than a renewal procedure.

Roger32, will it be possible to post us a picture of the blade as well as the general dimensions (length, width, thickness et al.)? Pleeaase?

I've already tried making one using mild steel to create a template, the problem is that, although it seems to fit and look right, it doesn't retract the blade when I make the adustments! It pushes forward - no problem, and leave's it there when I try pull it back.

Once I get it right, I'll post the drawings and the procedure for making the blade, including hardening etc.

Regards

Bryan

Just seen this thread but never participated in a forum before! I have a new Paramo No.10 plane and managed to get some Stanley blades today which look very close to the original. Width is 51mm whereas the original is about 52mm. Depth is the same. Look for Stanley code: 0-12-378. Cost was £3.13 for 5 blades. Hope this assists.

I just brought my old Paramo 10 out of retirement. I have had it since 1970-something. I found that I only had one rusty blade left and very much wanted to buy some new ones. So, Lawrie, do these new Stanley blades of yours also work?? Mogens

Yes Mogens, Stanley code:0-12-378 blades appear to fit OK. I've found my Paramo plane after 20 years, still in its wrapper and I just wanted to have some spares for when I move to a far-flung country. These Stanley blades still seem to be in my local shop but I do not know whether they are also redundant stock! Is Stanley still making a plane using these blades? My fabulous olde-worlde shop is Turtles of Croydon on +44 20 8688 5513. They are so willing I'm sure they would export!

Good luck!

hi, I've just found this forum whilst looking for the availability of blades, having recovered my rusty old paramo.
I have cleaned of the rust, stripped, cleaned & oiled the whole thing. picked out the best blade, cleaned & stropped it a little, then made a gate, some shelves & a storage box for my van.
I think its the first time the plane has been used for 20=30 years, and it was perfect.
I have more blades which are a little rusty, (though they were well greased when left) I will have a go a cleaning them when I get a minute, and probably try to get some stanleys as well.
regards

vic.

BTW

mine has the rebate guide with it, which I think was part of why I bought it in the first place.

well I've cleaned up the old blades, which are in fact ok. but they are in fact stanley blades, not paramo. I have also bought some new ones locally.

I did in the past sharpen the blades, although a bit tricky and fiddly to hold. but as I like to put 'my own edge' on them, (and in response to a previous question) decide to attempt to improve the situation.

I cut a peice of timber, the width of the blade, at an angle of 30º then at the angled end on the flat side (not the angled) cut a slot for the blade to sit in level with the timber. then a peice of steel, again the width of the blade and about 50mm (2" in old money !) long. (this length is imaterial.) which I drilled and bolted to the timber so that it clamped the blade in position.

the blade when fitted to this device extends slightly, and when sharpening, with the blade in contact with the stone and the other end of the angled timber held just short of resting on the stone, the correct angle is obtained.

it works very well indeed, so if any of you can't obtain blades, (or simply want to mess about as I do) it is a nice little worth while project.

incidentally I have also made one up for plane irons (in a similar manner) although I have a couple of honing guides which are currently inexpensive, but I find the home made one, easier and better ( as one can use the whole of the stone, rather than just over half of it) and of course more satifactory.
