Default popped nails

Any advice on keeping nails from popping? I have had a problem recently with nails coming up and penetrating the surface of a painting on a wood panel. the wood is 1/4 birch ply which is nailed and glued to 1 by 2 pine, the nails were countersunk and filled with minwax wood filler. then two coats of gesso (primer) over the entire surface of the board then probably 5 or six coats of acrylic. The nail heads are quite apparent in the painting now, and knocking them back down then filling them then matching the paint is a quite a big deal. I used 3/4 inch finishing nails. My studio can get quite cold at times, not below 50, I noticed the popped nails when the painting were at a warmer location, room temp for a week. Any advice on how i could avoid this problem from happening ever again. Thanks

try using tiny screws instead..... (maybe put just a dab of wood glue on first)
